Maritime Sustainability
The maritime sector is responsible for around 90% of the world's trade, and the shipping sector alone generates an estimated $500 billion in revenue annually. In Europe specifically, inland waterway transport transports around 558 million tonnes of cargo annually. Especially in the Netherlands, inland shipping is particularly significant, accounting for around 40% of freight transport. This underlines the importance of the maritime industry in the global economy, especially in Europe.
However, there are also problems surrounding the maritime industry. In 2018, the global shipping industry was responsible for 2.9% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which is a significant amount and clearly needs to be cut to create a future for the maritime industry. This number explains the urgent need in regulation of the maritime industry, where the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and EU are already working on and implementing several regulations to reduce the impact on the environment and people. This website focuses on these regulations in such a way that it aims to make complying with these legislations easier.
This ship map shows the movement of many ships around the world. This illustrates the importance of the maritime industry for global trade.
